Duluth FC lost its opening Minnesota Super Cup game of the season on June 4, falling 4-2 to the St. Croix Legends in Stillwater, Minnesota.
This marked the start of Duluth’s second year taking part in the Minnesota Super Cup, a tournament that looks to help create matchups between the best-performing Minnesotan clubs across different leagues. St. Croix, based in Stillwater, play in the USL League Two. This was the two team’s first competitive meeting.
The night started poorly for Duluth as St. Croix scored three goals in the opening half hour to take a dominant 3-0 lead. The BlueGreens were coming off a positive 4-1 win last weekend against Sioux Falls in NPSL play. Duluth’s Jireh Oyebamiji converted a penalty kick just before halftime to make it 3-1, but the BlueGreens still had a lot of work to do in the second half. Charlie Wood scored a second goal for Duluth in the second half to close the gap to 3-2, but a late St. Croix goal on the counter attack ensured the loss for Duluth at 4-2.
Duluth’s next game will be against the Minnesota TwinStars at home on June 8.
